With my high school girl friend Elly Benson, at Wine Jar on Fillmore last evening.  This rather bizarre pose was her idea, I’ll have you know.  Elly and I have known each other since we were 12, and she was the co-editor-in-chief of our high school newspaper, the New Trier News, where I was (shocker) one of two opinions page columnists our senior year.  We got into many a fight about me being over word count / missing deadlines. Some things never change!!
When she was at Stanford, I visited her (and our other newspaper buddies, Liz & Molly, as well as my childhood bff Natasha) so often people started to think I attended Stanford.  I wish!  (They rejected me no less than three times.)  That’s also how I got to know a hilarious computer science major named Evan Doll, who founded a really cool company called Flipboard.
Elly is now an lawyer here in SF, but she used to work for the Sierra Club, which isn’t at all surprising given her undying love of nature.  When we were in eighth grade, we went on a summer trip canoeing the boundary waters of Canada together - and she now hikes & camps nearly every weekend a few hours outside of SF.  I promised her that I would come with one time this August.  Given that I haven’t camped in years, that should be interesting. ;)
I’m working from her place in … actually, I have no idea in what SF neighborhood we’re located right now … but I do know I desperately need some brunch before my San Francisco Chronicle meeting later today.
Tonight I have dinner with another high school friend, Josh Forman, now the founder of a really cool company called Inkling, which transforms textbooks into digital educational tools for the iPad.  We’re still looking for a place to eat … anyone have an awesome suggestion?
PS. Yes, I’m insanely proud of my friends, who have accomplished and are accomplishing such incredible things - and are genuinely good people, as well.  If I brag a little about them, many apologies.  It’s hard not to … they’re just awesome.
